As of October 23, 2026, the Department of Justice is conducting a criminal investigation into Corey Lewandowski, a former political adviser to Donald Trump and top aide at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), following a referral from DHS's inspector general. The inquiry stems from allegations that Lewandowski profited off his role in government by seeking payment in exchange for protecting and growing the interests of the GEO Group, which was pursuing unrelated government contracts worth up to $220 million. In response, Lewandowski’s attorney, Adam Trigg, stated that his client denies any wrongdoing while serving voluntarily for the country. The Wall Street Journal first reported on this matter, with Reuters confirming it later. Neither the Justice Department nor Lewandowski have been contacted formally by DOJ regarding the investigation as of yet.
The justice department under Trump has investigated several prominent critics of the president, including the former FBI director James Comey and the New York attorney general Letitia James, but investigations of people close to Trump have been rare.
The department has also moved to dismiss several existing cases involving Trump allies, including supporters charged in connection with the 6 January 2021 attack on the US Capitol.
