A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck northern Tibet on Thursday evening, with its epicenter located about 190 km (120 miles) east-northeast of Nagqu, in a sparsely populated, high-altitude area. The quake occurred at 10:33 p.m. local time and was felt across the region. According to China's state news agency Xinhua, at least 16 people were killed and over 32 injured, with more than 300 homes destroyed. The earthquake’s depth was reported by the China Earthquake Networks Center as 6.2 miles, while the United States Geological Survey recorded it at 11 miles. This is the strongest quake in the region since a similar event occurred less than two months ago near Nepal and Tibet, which also resulted in significant casualties and damage.
